I’ve been in love with books and words forever and decided at age 7 I wanted to be a writer (see some poems I wrote at that age below). I wrote for the local newspaper as a teen, and filled about a million journals with poems and stories and thoughts.

While I loved writing, I also had bills to pay so after getting my BA in English Lit (with a minor in Economics) from Queen’s University in Kingston and an MBA in Marketing from U of T, I worked in marketing and advertising in Corporate Canada. That’s still my day job today – marketing director, copywriter and website builder for a coaching company.

I grew up in Montreal, Quebec but now live in Newmarket, Ontario and have three (now grown) children: Sarah, Eryn and Trysten. I LOVED reading with them when they were little (our house still has overflowing shelves of children’s books). I ran an online book store called Neverending Stories for about ten years because I loved sharing great books with other people.

While I don’t have any pets right now, as a family we had tons of cats (and mice, fish, turtles and geckos) over the years – all named for characters in books! Our last cat, Merlin, was the inspiration for my very first book, The Chicken Cat.

How I Got Started

I remember falling in love with books around the age of 7 when I turned my room into a library. I confiscated every book in the house and made up little pockets and cards for each. If any family member wanted to read anything, they had to come through me first and be subject to my borrowing rules and due dates!

Around this time, I also started to write. Here are two poems from a book I created for my grandparents. Even back them I was writing about cats and frogs!

McLellan is a fine storyteller, combining a matter-of-fact narrative style – life’s imperfections are fixed with a clear-eyed gaze – with elegant flourishes in turns of phrase and twists of plot.
